Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an exciting opportunity to serve as a Maintenance Supervisor at our Clifton Area Headquarters within the NOVA District.
Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but not limited to:
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to provide technical direction and guidance to skilled, semi-skilled and manual laborers.
• Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
• Knowledge of inventory and budgeting practices.
• Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
• Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs related to roadway construction and maintenance.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of handheld and power tools.
• Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices with ability to supervise others to include performance management.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Knowledge and application of work zone safety, traffic controls and flagging operations to include the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and emergency operations.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to compile and analyze data; complete reports and records, requiring business, English and math skills.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures.
• Skill in operating computers and navigating software applications.
• Demonstrated ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials, and equipment needed to accomplish the job.
Licenses and certifications required for job & position:
• Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
• Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
• Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Safety
• CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
• Flagger
Minimum Qualifications
• Valid driver's license.
• Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
• Ability to perform manual labor.
• Ability to direct, evaluate, and train others.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skilled in operating and maintaining light to heavy trucks and equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
• Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures.
Additional Considerations
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Management, Maintenance, Construction, or related field desired.
• DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.
• Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.
• Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower.
• Ability to gather data, conduct research, and create reports.
• Experience overseeing emergency operations activities including snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
• Inventory management experience.
• Experience in roadway maintenance and, or construction activities.

• This position is designated as essential, employees are required to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
• Approved Safety Shoes are required. There is an opportunity for reimbursement.
• Candidates may also be required to complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen.
• May be required to operate or work in the vicinity of devices containing radioactive materials and emitting low levels of ionizing radiation.
• Position requires unrestricted mobility, including, at times, unrestricted mobility in irregular terrain, working at heights and in confined spaces, making visual observations.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time; the ability to work in a variety of environments affected by, but not limited to, such elements as dust, vapors, heat, and moisture.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
