is seeking a customer-focused individual with strong leadership skills and experience to supervise roadway maintenance /construction activities as the Maintenance Superintendent in Salem Residency’s Troutville Area Headquarters, in Botetourt County, Virginia.
This position inspects roadway assets; plans, prioritizes, schedules, and manages roadway maintenance /construction activities; manages budgets in planning work, analyzing data, and monitoring expenditures; manages area headquarters staff, equipment, materials, and other inventory; and oversees hired equipment and contractors. The Superintendent develops and manages the area safety program, coordinates response to accidents, incidents, inclement weather, and other emergencies in assigned area.
Success in this position requires understanding of roadway/roadside maintenance policies, processes and materials; familiarity with specialty equipment used in roadway/roadside maintenance; an attitude of servant leadership; strong customer focus; emotional intelligence, and sound interpersonal skills in order to build internal/external customer relationships, investigate employee or citizen issues and work order requests, and to recommend cost-effective and responsive solutions within the assigned jurisdiction.

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
•Ability to effectively manage headquarters facility, assigned equipment, materials, and other area resources.
•Ability to plan, schedule, assign, train, and evaluate the work of others.
•Considerable knowledge of roadway and roadside maintenance and construction equipment, materials, methods, practices, and procedures.
•Considerable knowledge of general safety practices, and work area protection and traffic control methods and procedures.
•Ability to work within a budget.
•Skill in the use of computers and Microsoft Office software.
•Knowledge of environmental protocols and requirements in roadway and roadside maintenance.
•Ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
•Valid Driver’s License and the ability to travel independently among assigned work locations.
Additional Considerations
•Experience with all aspects of personnel supervision
*experience training others in roadway and roadside maintenance operations and techniques.
•Experience leading emergency operations such as snow removal, storm damage and accident clean up.
•Experience using computers to maintain inventory and expenditure records, analyze data, and prepare schedules and reports.
•Experience developing cost estimates and spending plans.
•Experience with a combination of specialized Inventory management, financial management, work order management, and personnel management software.
•Experience building relationships with community members and leaders in a customer service perspective.
•DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control certification. Responsible Land Disturber certification.
•Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties. Safety shoes must e to code, and are reimbursable up to $200 annually.
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.
VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
