Job Duties


The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking an Ferry Repair Technician Sr. at the Jamestown - Scotland Ferry. As the Ferry Repair Technician Sr., you will perform maintenance and repair tasks on all mechanical equipment onboard the ferries and docking facilities. Prepare ferries for semi-annual and annual US Coast Guard safety inspections.

Information Processing and Paperwork

Prepare, process, and maintain required maintenance and repair documentation. Generate, complete, and close-out work orders in computer system. Perform time and leave entry. Prepare parts requests. Complete paperwork for warranty inspections and repairs.

Maintain Vessel Auxiliary Systems

Perform maintenance and repairs on auxiliary systems like Air condition units, sanitary system, steering, fuel, electrical equipment and other auxiliary equipment on board the ferries.

Maintain and Repair Marine equipment

Diagnose and repair marine engines including fuel pumps and injectors, governors, jacket water pumps, cylinder heads, power assemblies and other components. Perform tune ups and preventive maintenance.

Prepare ferries for U.S. Coast Guard Inspections

Inspect and test safety devices, relief valves, shut down devices, firefighting equipment, and other safety-related equipment to verify proper system operation. Accompany U.S. Coast Guard inspectors during inspection to verify system operability.

Maintain and Repair Dock Equipment

Maintain and repair loading ramps including repair or replacement of sheaves, cables, hydraulic components, and other associated equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on dock equipment.


Minimum Qualifications


• Ability to operate large and small equipment, motor vehicles, and tools.

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

• Ability to read, comprehend service and repair manuals, gauges, testing devices and blueprints.

• Valid driver's license.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

• Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of marine mechanical equipment or commercial mechanical equipment. 

• Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.

• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

• Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance on a variety of marine equipment.


Additional Considerations


• Experience repairing and maintaining marine mechanical equipment.

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, or related field desired.

• Experience preparing for U.S. Coast Guard inspections.


• Experience repairing and maintaining marine mechanical or commercial equipment.


• Possess a strong understanding and extensive experience in electrical repair and
maintenance, i.e. lights, electrical panels, circuit breakers, switchboards, switches,
wires/cables, junction boxes, receptacles, fuse blocks, terminal blocks, bus bars, relays, PLC,
CAN bus, Modbus, battery components, alternators, motors, motor controllers, alarm panels,
AC/DC distribution.


• The ability to work with outside contractors to complete a task in a timely manner.
