The Lynchburg District has a exciting career opportunity in Structure and Bridge for a Senior Bridge Engineer. The successful candidate will apply their bridge engineering, design and project management skills to assist in maintaining over 2,000 structures and Keep Virginia Moving.
VDOT is seeking a qualified candidate to function as a Senior Engineer for Lynchburg Structure & Bridge to provide engineering expertise in assigned program areas. Provide recommendations for resolution of project issues. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs. Assist in developing, implementing and monitoring policies, procedures, guidance and practices for engineering projects and programs.
The successful candidate will design, coordinate, and prepare structural plans used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of highway bridges and structures. The successful candidate will be the engineer of record for bridge designs and plans of varying complexities. Will investigate the condition of existing structures and develop scope of work for repairs/rehabilitations. Will serve as project manager for new bridge designs and bridge rehab projects, as well as provide technical guidance on structural design issues from the preliminary engineering process through construction. This position will oversee and check the work of other engineers, signing and sealing their plans.
Minimum Qualifications
• Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include automated engineering and design software.
• Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or related field.
• Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
• Experience applying civil engineering principles and practices related to structural engineering to include strength of materials, statics and structural analysis.
• Experience in structural steel design, reinforced and prestressed concrete design and soil mechanics.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
• Knowledge of specifications, codes and regulations related to structural design (e.g. AASHTO and LRFD structural design standards).
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
• Ability to manage projects and review and administer consultant design contracts.
Additional Considerations
• Experience in the design and analysis of bridges and structures.
• Experience using MS Office, bridge design, and MicroStation software.
• Experience in bridge design engineering, repair, and rehabilitation.
• Practical application of AASHTO's LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and bridge design experience governed by the Specification.
• Experience managing projects and consultant contracts
