Job Duties


Are you someone driven by innovation, with a passion for design? We are looking for professionals with hydraulic engineering interest, who can support the Virginia Department of Transportation in developing new drainage designs to keep Virginia Safe and moving!

VDOT’s Bristol District Location & Design Section is seeking a designer to create and review drainage, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control designs in the process of construction plan production for VDOT, municipal, and land development roadway projects. You will investigate, evaluate, design, and recommend solutions for drainage problems resulting from construction, maintenance, and citizen complaints. This position will assist the District Hydraulic Engineer with completing work tasks using hydraulic software, Microstation, and other non-CADD applications; and assist in the management of projects/tasks including development of and management of scope, schedule, budget, deliverables, change management, quality, and status reports. In this role you will participate in field reviews and project meetings; effectively communicate with VDOT staff, and external customers; and analyze and interpret engineering data and information.

Minimum Qualifications


• Engineering experience applying design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering design and analysis programs.

• Experience applying peak discharge hydrology, open and closed system design, erosion and sediment control features, and stormwater management.

• Proficient in hydraulics of bridged waterways, bridge scour analysis, flood routing and calculation of run-off values.

• Knowledge of civil engineering principles as they relate to hydraulic, roadway design and Standard Design technical knowledge.

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.

• FEMA floodplain experience.


Additional Considerations


• Work experience in transportation engineering project management.

• Knowledge of VDOT's Road and Bridge Specifications and Standards.

• PE license or EIT certification.

• Knowledge of VDOT drainage policies, design procedures and FEMA policies and procedures to include VDOT's Drainage Manual.

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering, or related field desired.

• Erosion and Sediment Control Program Administrator Inspector or Plan Reviewer Certification.
